💄 Does silk stretch when wet?

Water Makes Silk Fibers More Fragile. Water is no friend to silk. Water weakens silk because it causes the fibers to stretch which in turn causes them to tear more easily. [1] Because getting silk wet causes the individual silk fibers to become more fragile, it is important to hand wash silk garments with great care.

Just a thought, if I remember from my fabric study classes, silk is weaker when wet. Found a reference that sez 20% weaker when wet. So pulling very hard on it when wet may actually be damaging the thread.

Never use chlorine bleach or products containing chlorine on silk. It will permanently change the color. And if you get a spill, don’t rub silk when it’s wet. Silk will chafe easily or develop light areas if rubble while wet. Only blot if you get a spill. Some “washable” silk dyes do not react well to water.

An increase in Young’s modulus is also apparent, increasing ~proportionally as a function of the post-spin stretching ratio. These results are consistent with previous reports on the effects of post-spin stretching upon mechanical properties of wet-spun silk-based fibers 9–12, 15, 42–45, 59. Additionally, the tensile properties of these fibers fall within the range of previously reported wet-spun fibers from recombinant spidroin solubilized in HFIP.

Another reader, a Judy Willingham from Manhattan, Kansas, suggests attaching the clasp and dipping the exposed silk in ordinary rubbing alcohol to wet the string. Then she shifts the pearls back toward the clasp and suspends the whole thing to let the silk dry. Willingham claims this straightens the silk and stretches it a little before knotting.

Shrinking Silk. Silk can shrink if it is pre-washed for more than approximately five minutes. Letting a silk garment sit in water for a long time before washing causes its fibers to tighten and twist, thus producing a shrinking effect. Silk that is washed in hot water will also shrink.

Post-spin stretching of the resulting wet-spun fibers in water significantly improved fiber strength, enriched β-sheet conformation without complete α-helix depletion, and enhanced birefringence. These methods allow reproducible aciniform silk fiber formation, albeit with lower extensibility than native silk, requiring conditions and

From these facts you get the following rules to follow while working with silk: You have to handle wet silk with lots of respect and care; While blocking, you cannot stretch it as much as you’d love to lest it breaks; If stretched the yarn might get weakened or the fibre might get damaged; You should not dry the silk projects in direct sunlight

The goal when stretching your silk is to create just enough tension so that the silk remains taut while you are painting but not so tight that it tears. Your piece may sag a bit once it becomes wet with dye or paint so you may need to adjust the pinning as you are painting.
