💄 Vinyl matt over vinyl silk ?

If your existing paint is flaking you need to scrape and sand that first. But don't try putting matt on silk - you'll end up with that peeling off too. Give the whole wall a good clean down and sand to take the sheen off and give it a key. More effort but better than doing it twice when it goes wrong. 2017-08-30T15:25:02+01:00.

💄 Can you paint vinyl matt over vinyl silk?

yes their is. you could paint the walls in soft sheen, which is in between matt and silk but personally i hate it. for a perfect matt finish, give the walls a light sand, mist coat (watered down emulsion 50/50) with white paint and then 2-3 coats of your chosen colour on top. any other prep such as filling will need to be done needless to say

💄 Can you paint vinyl matt over vinyl silk carpet?

There are two ways that you can successfully paint over silk with matt emulsion paint. 1) Key the surface, meaning, to use materials such as sandpaper, wet-or-dry paper or sanding discs, to smooth down and remove the gloss surface prior to painting. Use 100 grade sandpaper and ensure that all of the surfaces that have silk are sanded thoroughly.

I would use a contract Matt to blank out the silk then vinyl Matt over the top, if you're using vinyl Matt, remember if you're using more than 1 tin to box them together so you get the same shade all round the room, also cut and roll 1 wall at a time otherwise you will see a difference in shade when it dries.

It will be fine over sanded vinyl silk or the Zinsser. Some trade matt paints, often referred to generically as contract matt, have a much lower vinyl content. Whilst they are great to use on plaster that might still be slightly damp or new, they are less suitable on areas of high traffic as they cannot be wiped clean.

What they said about matt over silk was that matt paint will not stick to the silk, that's why it cracks. They said that painting over the silk with soft sheen may help but they recommend removing the shine from the silk e.g by sanding before applying the matt.

Anyway, after 1 coat of white Matt emulsion he then put on 2 coats of vinyl Matt in my chosen colour (both coats put on within space of 3hrs).. the following morning EVERY wall & even the ceiling & coving was cracked like a dry riverbed/spidervein being worse in corners & tops/bottoms where brushed on as well as rollered.

Vinyl silk will go straight over matt no probs - (but not the other way round). You'll need at least two coats as the first tends to soak in and you won't get a completely smooth finish, also worth diluting by about 10% which will help reduce roller marks.
